Overall, I feel like telecom services and products are very important because they are used in my everyday life and I feel like they help me throughout my day. Whether I need to make a phone call on a moments notice, I need my insurance card when I am getting a safety check or I need to access the internet, I am able to use these telecom products and services.

After keeping these blogs, I began to realize the many cases in which I used these services and products. They are almost a basic necessity for most people all over the world and I continue to see them improving, adapting and changing over the years to suit our lives.

There are cases in which the telecom service/ product did not work properly or it was not what I planned, but overall I didn't have too many problems and I would not cease from using the product/ service because of these issues.

Lastly, I think our lives are bettered by these services because they help make us more connected and we are able to do things quicker and almost anywhere we may be. As mentioned in other posts I have read, using the internet can connect us to people all over the world through gaming and messaging services. People are also adapting and changing the technology through applications like Windows Vista. I look forward to seeing how telecom products and services influence my daily life in the future.

What was the telecom product/service?
Internet

o How were you directly or indirectly impacted by the product/service?
I was directly affected by my wireless not working while I was trying to access this class. The wireless network said there was two conflicting IP address' trying to access the internet.

My classmates were indirectly affected by my not being in class because they could have used my help during the first part of the debate on the Telecommunications.

o Did you/others/society benefit from the use? If so, how?
I usually benefit from being able to access the internet all over campus, but when it doesn't work for some reason, it is really frustrating. Society also benefits from the service because of its portability and its ease of access.

o Did problems arise because of the telecom product/service?
YES! Like I mentioned before, I guess there was something wrong with my IP address or something wrong with the network at UHM and thus I was only able to access the internet for a short amount of time before everything froze and then I got kicked off. I had to drive home so that I could get back on my own personal network and then everything worked fine. This is the first time this has happened to me, but I hope it doesn't happen again.

o How was your communication/information exchange facilitated or hindered by the product/service?
My information exchange was hindered because I was not able to get into the yahoo conference and thus I was not able to participate. This hindrance was one instance in which the telecommunication product did not work as I had planned.

o Did your communication pattern/style change when the product/service was used? In what way?
My communication pattern turned to urgency and asking questions of my classmates to solve the issue.

What was the telecom product/service?
Fax Machine

o How were you directly or indirectly impacted by the product/service?
I was directly affected by the fax machine because I had to get my safety check, and I forgot to get my insurance card when I was home in Texas. So...I had USAA fax my insurance card to Firestone so I could pass my safety check.

There is also many instances in which I fax contracts to the vendors we work with at the Wedding Coordinating Company. We are able to use computer to fax documents and make changes.

o Did you/others/society benefit from the use? If so, how?
I think people are either directly affected or indirectly affected by fax machines depending on whether or not they use the machine. I had never been affected by fax machines until I got older, I learned how to use one and I had a reason to use one. I sometimes think they are an "old invention" because now we can send things digitally and we can reduce paper. It will be interesting to see if the fax machine will stay around in the next few years.

o Did problems arise because of the telecom product/service?
I have not had any problems with fax machines other than the time I tried to fax American paper in a Japanese fax machine, that was interesting. I am sure problems arise often, but I do not use the telecom product that often, so I have not run into any major issues.

o How was your communication/information exchange facilitated or hindered by the product/service?
I don't think my communication is hindered. I do think it is very helpful in the situation of needing a document in just a few mins. I was able to call USAA and they faxed the document within 4 mins. There would be no other way to get the document without having to wait for it in the mail or leaving Firestone to go to a library, get on the internet and access the USAA site and then print out the insurance. Overall, it is much easier to make a quick phone call, answer some questions and have it faxed over.

o Did your communication pattern/style change when the product/service was used? In what way?
I don't think my communication pattern/style changed because it is used as more of a document exchange. I guess there is some differences in the fact that we have to have a cover page and we have to make sure all the information is clearly noted.

o What was the telecom product/service?
Online chat services using the internet and personal computers, such as Yahoo Chat!

o How were you directly or indirectly impacted by the product/service?
I was directly affected while using Yahoo Chat! because I was interacting with my class members. My class members were also affected because they were debating with me and the other members

o Did you/others/society benefit from the use? If so, how?
I think society benefits from the use of Yahoo Chat! because it is an inexpensive way to communicate. It is also an alternative to talking over the phone or writing letters. I think that many people do not use the service due to the lack of knowledge about the service and/or the internet.

There are some cases in which Yahoo Chat! can be negative, such as not knowing who exactly you are talking to in some cases and at times the communication can seem less personal because you don't have a personal connection with them, their aren't any non-verbal cues (other than smily faces), ect.

o Did problems arise because of the telecom product/service?
I felt like the debate was a little in favor of our team because we were able to lead the debate into our own points and it was difficult to debate with the time limit and the amount of information. It was hard to make all the points we wanted to because we couldn't debate each point in entirety. I also didn't feel like it was a debate because we had so little time and the paragraphs were so big. You also can't be as emotionally connected to the debate when you are typing your thoughts.

o How was your communication/information exchange facilitated or hindered by the product/service?
The communication was hindered by the use of a chat program. I don't think we (the students) have the same type of relationships during an online class as we would have in a in-class situation. It also takes time to contact each of the members to communicate and get papers done. Overall, I think chat services hinder communication compared to facilitating communication.

o Did your communication pattern/style change when the product/service was used? In what way?
I think my communication pattern changes because I have to be more explicit when I make statements and I have to make sure my thought comes across correctly. I also can't tell when people are kidding or being serious, without the addition of a smiley face. Otherwise, I don't use short hand, that often, so I don't think I communicate differently in that aspect.

o What was the telecom product/service? I am going to discuss the use of a cell phone on this post.

o How were you directly or indirectly impacted by the product/service? I am directly affected by a cell phone because it is the only phone that I have. I use it to communicate to people on hawaii as well as on the mainland. It is also the only way I can talk to my fiance when he is overseas. I am indirectly affected by cell phones because people are always on their cell phone: in traffic, walking around campus, ect. I am indirectly affected because I may want to talk to someone and they will be on a cell phone instead of talking with me. I can also overhear conversations, whether I want to or not.

o Did you/others/society benefit from the use? If so, how? I think I benefit from the use of a cell phone because I can call anyone, anywhere. I am usually not in one spot for very long and thus it would take a long time to get information to me if I just had a land line instead of a cell phone. I like the easability of being able to be reached and being able to reach others. I am linked to many by this cell phone from on hawaii to on the mainland. I think society benefits from the use of a cell phone because society is able to reach emergency services and reach their families in times of need. I think cell phones are a great advancement in technology.

o Did problems arise because of the telecom product/service?

I have not had any problems with this telecom product. I think their are concerns with how cellphones hinder communication or cause communication to be less personal, but I do not think it changes how I use the telecom service.

o How was your communication/information exchange facilitated or hindered by the product/service?
I think my communication is facilitated because it makes my communication quicker, more efficient and portable. I don't think the cell phone hinders my communication unless the call is dropped or their is too much interference.

o Did your communication pattern/style change when the product/service was used? In what way?

I think my communication pattern has changed because I can call someone to tell them something and make the conversation quick. I am also called a lot more on my cell phone because it is so easy to pick up the phone and call me then it is to figure something out of their own. Also, with caller ID, we usually do not answer with who is calling and who we are looking for. We assume that the person we are calling is the person that will pick up the phone. I think we have lost some of the formality when using the cell phone. Otherwise, I don't think my communication pattern has changed much when looking at talking on a land line compared to a cell phone.

o What was the telecom product/service? I think the most important telecom product that I used this week was computers. My fiance helped me to re-build his old computer and set it up to play a game we bought.

o How were you directly or indirectly impacted by the product/service? I was directly affected by the product because I was helping to re-build it and to play with it. I am indirectly impacted by computers all the time, when someone uses the computer and is able to give me information, when my fiance plays for hours on the computer, ect.

o Did you/others/society benefit from the use? If so, how? I benefit from using a computer for entertainment, educational reasons and for ease of use. I am able to easily type of a paper on my computer and print it out, instead of having to handwrite the paper. I think computers have made writing much easier because of spell checker, grammar check and the ease of reading the writing.

o Did problems arise because of the telecom product/service?
My finace and I had problems hooking up the computer with the printer and then wirelessly connecting my laptop with the printer. We had to go through all the security on the desktop to allow the laptop to access the desktop. I guess there are always problems with computers, it just depends on how well you can manage them. I lost all my iTunes music, so I had to buy a recovery system. It wasn't the end of the world, but it was a pain to get all the music back.

o How was your communication/information exchange facilitated or hindered by the product/service?

I think computers help people communicate because the papers are clearly written, grammatically correct and is easy to read, compared to a handwritten document. Laptops also allow portability, so college students/high school students can bring their computers to school and this can aid in their education and communication skills. There are also chat programs that can run off computers when connected to the internet, and this allows quick communication.

o Did your communication pattern/style change when the product/service was used? In what way?
I don't think there any changes in my communication when I use a computer. I think I write the same as I type on a computer, it may just be more organized.

Overall, I think computers are a wonderful asset to my education. I am also able to use computers for entertainment reasons. I couldn't imagine not having a computer.

o What was the telecom product/service? I used the internet a lot this week, along with the normal telecom products (cell phones, computers, ect.)

o How were you directly or indirectly impacted by the product/service? I was directly affected by the service because I was able to research my thesis project as well as access information on the internet that I am not able to access in the library, such as ebay and consumer websites for products. It directly affects the people who I buy and sell to on ebay as well the the companies that I require services from.

I guess it indirectly affects the people around me because they may use and interact with the products that I buy and I indirectly affect the people around me when I use the service because I may be able to persuade them to use the internet.

o Did you/others/society benefit from the use? If so, how? I think many people benefit from the use of the internet, because it is a open resource for many things as well as entertainment. There are so many uses for the internet that I do not feel like I could even name half of them. I know I benefit from the internet largely for a resource, it is like the yellowbook pages but 500 times larger. I planned a large part of my wedding using the internet, to contact services and through e-mail to establish contacts. I keep in contact with many through e-mail and I feel like this has been a great improvement to having to call all the time for something little.

o Did problems arise because of the telecom product/service?

I didn't have any problems with the internet this week. I have had some issues with finding the exact thing I am searching for on google, but other then that, it was good.

o How was your communication/information exchange facilitated or hindered by the product/service?

I think e-mail has helped me with my communication and information exchange between many different people ranging from friends to clients to service providers. I would much rather send an e-mail, then call and try to track down the right person. It allows me and the other person to answer at convenience.

o Did your communication pattern/style change when the product/service was used? In what way?

I think the communication is a little less personal. I wouldn't ask an important question or tell anyone something important over e-mail. I make sure to address the person politely, not misspell any words and make my conversations well thought out.

Otherwise, the week has been productive with my communication technology.
